We are currently inviting military veteran students, who are currently enrolled in college or preparing to enroll in college, to participate in the Veteran Cognition and Academic Success project.

To participate in a VCAS study, you must:

– be a military veteran (either previously serving or currently serving)
– be currently taking college courses or college preparatory classes (e.g., Veterans Upward Bound classes)
– have normal or corrected-to-normal vision (glasses and contacts are fine) and have normal or corrected-to-normal hearing
– be fluent in English (i.e., able to speak and understand English fluently)
– be able to make verbal and manual responses, such as pressing keys on a computer keyboard

We are currently recruiting for two studies: The Veteran Memory and Cognition Study and The Veteran Activity and Sleep Study

The Veteran Memory and Cognition Study

StudyParticipation in the VCAS study requires approximately 2 ½ hours of your time.  In the first part, you will complete an online questionnaire about your developmental, family, academic, medical, and work/military history. This questionnaire takes about 30 minutes to complete and is filled out at home.  The second part involves in-person testing, which will take place on the ASU Tempe campus in Coor Hall.  You will be given computerized memory, attention, and reasoning tests. For your participation, you will be compensated for your time with two movie ticket vouchers and a summary report of your performance on memory measures. When appropriate, you will be offered the chance to participate in memory strategy sessions or clinical services.

After the session, you will be emailed three questionnaires about your academic and cognitive progress over the next three years. You will receive the first questionnaire at the beginning of the semester following your initial testing. The second and third questionnaires will be emailed to you annually after that.

If you have any questions about the study or would like to participate in the study, submit an interest form or email us.

The Veteran Activity and Sleep Study

In the Veteran Activity and Sleep study, we are examining how sleep, heart rate, and activity are related to stress levels and cognitive performance in veteran students. Participants will complete an online questionnaire, wear a portable health monitoring device (a wrist device similar to a Fitbit) for approximately two weeks, and answer daily short online surveys. All study participants will be given 1) a pair of movie vouchers and 2) a summary of their sleep patterns and activity over the two weeks.  They will also be entered into a raffle for a brand new Fitbit Flex fitness. We will only be running this study through the summer of 2017, so if you would like to participate, please contact us soon.  To enroll or to get more information, submit an interest form or email us.
